YAL is a student-led community committed to advancing Pan-Africanism, cultural pride, and youth leadership within the university environment. Rooted in the values of unity, Ubuntu, integrity, and service, the community provides a platform for African students and allies to engage meaningfully with Africa’s history, identity, and future.

Membership is open to all university students, including African students and allies who share our vision. There is absolutely no membership fee to join YAL. Registering as a member unlocks voting rights in annual Executive Council elections, priority access to event tickets, and eligibility to publish guest columns or run regional hubs.

Aligned with the decolonial Pan-African leadership ethos, we challenge our members to lead with courage, discipline, and purpose. We focus on real-world actions, decolonial intellectual discussions, and community-building initiatives that require stepping outside of our comfort zones to build sustainable solutions.

YAL utilizes a restorative, consensus-based conflict resolution framework. Disputes are worked through via Restorative Consultation, Consensus-Building Circles, and neutral Mediation Panels to repair relational health rather than using punitive sanctions.

You can submit general suggestions directly on our homepage using the 'Make a Change Forum'. Any idea that reaches 10 or more upvotes is added to the Executive Council agenda for official debate. For detailed event concepts, you can submit proposals through our Contact page.

We offer a practical transition guide covering visa declarations, mobile money registration, local transit navigation, and contract reviews for off-campus housing. Additionally, we run weekly Ubuntu Listening Circles for peer mental wellness and pair first-years with senior student mentors.
